Are you tired of counting sheep just to put yourself into a good night sleep? Your body needs at least 8 hours of sleep to help you regenerate the energy you need for work on the following day. Sleep also relaxes your mind. However, not everyone can go to sleep easily, especially you’re experiencing stress or sleeping disorder like insomnia.  Here are some of natural remedies that you can try to have a good night sleep:

Herbal teas

  • Chamomile. Its main benefit is to induce good night sleep and treat anxiety. For years, people have been using this natural tea to fight insomnia. The aromatic flavor that you get from freshly brewed chamomile relaxes your mind, thus putting you to sleep naturally.
  • Valerian Root. It is an herb used to treat sleeping problems, headaches and anxiety. Valerian root can be used as tea or as food flavoring.
  • Lavender. Aside from its relaxing color to the eyes, lavender has also relaxing effect to your mind, inducing natural sleep after a tiring day. Lavender teas are available for easy brewing. Pour hot water on a cup and let it brew for 3 minutes. Drink it before bedtime while it’s still warm.

Relaxation

You need to put everything away to help yourself relax after long day of work or studies. To relax, make sure that your room is conducive for relaxation. Light colored curtain, dimmer lights, and clean room can help you relax. You can also open the window to let the fresh air in. This will soothe your skin, making it easier to breathe.

  • Take a bath. You can also take a warm or cold bath before going to sleep. An hour soaked in a tub with your favorite jazz playing at the background will help clear your mind from everything you worry about. To prepare your bath, add some bath salt, preferably chamomile or lavender scent.
  • Read a book. Don’t read books about your work or anything that will add more stress. Read some self-help or coffee table book for a change. Open an Emily Bronte novel and indulge yourself to the scenic views of England.
  • Turn off the TV. Some people want their room quiet. A TV in your bedroom will not put you to sleep but will tire your eyes more.

Breathing Exercises

Letting yourself loose for a bit will relax your body and mind. Practicing breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation will help you clear your mind, thus stimulate a better sleep.

  • Simple Breathing. Put on an Indian seat. Close your eyes and gently take a deep breathe through your nose. Slowly, breathe through your mouth, taking out smaller breaths until all the air you took in was released. Repeat ten counts.
  • Simple stretching. Stand with your feet apart. Stretch your arms above your head with palms facing each other. Reach as far as you can without tiptoeing. Take a deep breath through your nose. Slowly put down your arms on your side while exhaling through your mouth. Repeat this ten times.

The key to a good night sleep is to relax your body and mind. Let the night take all your worries and reconnect with yourself. Simple tea brewing, relaxation, and breathing exercises can be done inside your room. Don’t let your work and stress get into your way of getting enough sleep.
